Tablet Navigation

Using a navigation system is essential for surveillance. You need it to locate your subject’s residence, to know where your subject visits and routes taken by your subject. But your navigation serves the following purpose: you need a large screen navigation for pursuit as it is crucial an investigator is aware of the surrounding streets. During pursuit, it is sometimes necessary to drive on a street parallel to your subject and having a navigation tablet will drastically assist you in determining and/or predicting your subject’s routes. I have found that cellphone screens are often too small as they do not allow me to easily see the 5-10 streets surrounding my location.

Most my surveillance vehicles were purchased with stock navigations or in-dash navigations, but I find myself primarily relying on Google Maps. As such, for my main surveillance vehicle (which did not have any navigation system) I have elected to use the Nexus 7 tablet. This tablet is fairly cheap (under $200) and receives the latest Google updates. Since I use my cellphone as a hotspot, I generally do not have any issues with service when using the tablet.

Please Note: I used a Heavy Duty Flexible Aluminum mount (from Amazon for $35) to mount the tablet.
